Trail Running – Bayview Conservation Park

Right on my door step I have these trails.  Its a Winters day here in the sub-tropical Mount Cotton area 8 kms from the sleepy Redland Bay coast, and the air temperature was reaching 19C, perfect weather for a taper week trail run.  I took some photos with my new iphone which is larger and just fits in my fuel belt.    Love these photos… it captures everything I wanted it to capture.

Vegan Cafe – The Green Edge, Brisbane, Australia

This is one of our favourite places to have lunch.   The dining experience is very laid back and their menu is filled with a dish for everyone.  I try a different meal and dessert each time I visit.  My wife ordered a Black Bean Burger with chips and I ordered Jackfruit Burger with chips.   Their burgers are really good, filling and enjoyable.  Love their homemade chips too.  I have read about Jackfruit in vegan cooking, but I have never eaten it before.  It was flavoured very well and also had a pleasure texture and taste.

For dessert we shared two large donuts one flavoured with salted caramel and one with strawberry.  Very decadent and I have never eaten salted caramel before so that is why I chose that flavour.

Also I think it is important for all vegans to support vegan establishments so they stay in business.   Spread the love of vegan cooking to your omnivore friends too…

Trail Running – Encounter With A Baby Brown Snake

Yesterday I had the pleasure to meet a baby Brown Snake which was sunbathing on the trail.  The trail was very narrow so there was no way I could move around the snake.  Brown snakes are the second most venomous land snake in the world.  Even the baby Brown Snakes are equipped with venom to kill.  Their venom kills in a matter of hours as opposed to days.  So I carefully stood my distance and moved the snake with a very long tree branch.  The snakes live here in the bush so that’s their place of residence so I expect to see them and keep my distance normally but this one was on the trail.   Snakes normally avoid humans.  This one was having a ball sunbathing in the sun.  I apologised to the snake for disturbing him….

Trail Running – Hard Water Bottles v Soft Water Bottles

I recently bought some soft water bottles for my ultra running training and future events.  I ran yesterday with the soft water bottles and found they stick out at the top a little bit but I fortunately I could hold, them down with some flexible loop ties on my Hydration vest.  I found that they felt good running with them as they mold to your body and you don’t really notice they are there.  The hard water bottles on the other hand are very noticeable.   For my upcoming ultra event the Coastal High 50 there are requirements for me to carry 2 litres of water, each bottle is 500ml so I will have two on the front of my vest and two in the back then swap them over when I need too.  I like that when the soft bottles are empty they just fold into a small bundle.  I would recommend changing from hard to soft water bottles just for the comfort reason alone.

Barefoot Running – Schumann Resonances

After reading the book “Born To Run” by Christopher McDougall  was intrigued about barefoot running.  In the book Christopher talks about this in length and it really struck a chord with me.  I had bought my first pair of Altra zero drop running shoes which are as close to barefoot as you can get about a year earlier before I read the book and found that my feet got very strong.  It makes perfect sense to me that feet have not changed for thousands of years so why not run into something as close to barefoot without all that corrective footwear accessories of modern running shoes.  So I am injured less now and have run a few trail ultra marathons.  Also something which I read about barefoot running in another book by Michael Sander was that there is a resonance frequency that the earth emits is the same frequency as our brain emits.  The frequency is 8 Hz.  This is also our natural circadian rhythm.  When we run barefoot we are in sync with the frequency of the earth.  I feel this when I run on the trails and feel connected to the earth.  If you run with running shoes which have corrective footwear accessories the distance of your feet from the earth is greater than barefoot shoes so your body is not in sync with the earth.  The frequency is called the Schumann resonances.

Trail Run – Jumped Over A Carpet Python

A couple of years ago now I was running around the trails in the Bayview Conservation Park and my heart stopped as I saw a very large snake which was crossing the trail.  The trail was about 3m wide and as I was running down a hill I only saw the snake very late so I had to jump over the snake and stop.  I saw that it was a Carpet Python which is a constrictor and is not venomous.  So I pulled, got as close as I could and took a short video.  The snake was the largest I have even seen and it was funny because the snake just slowly moved across the trail and into the bush.  The snake was not at all worried about my presences.   It was a beautiful experience seeing this snake free living in the bush.

Trail Run – Bayview Conservation Park

Fortunately I have some nice trails right in my door step, well 500m away which is really close.  There are many trails meandering through this conservation park some technical, some hilly and some pretty flat.   The amount of wildlife you see is amazing from black cockatoos, wallabies, goannas, echidnas, foxes and of cause snakes.  A couple of days ago I ran and took some photos of the area.  I was surprised to see a dead snakes on the road because I thought it was not the right time of the year for them to be active.

Vegan Fast Food – Vegan Burger

IMG_1809.JPGThere are many quick and easy meals you can put together at the control of your own hands.  Take this vegan burger.  Buy a vegan pattie and a bread roll .  As I was pressed for time I bought a couple of vegan lentil patties and heated them up in the frying pan, then started to put the salad filling together which was some rocket, tomatoes, pineapple, homemade hummus red onion and vegenaise (This is a new product for me and it tastes delicious it was expensive at $8 a jar but worth trying it.  I found it in a local IGA Supermarket)

I started to add the layers as the lentil patties were done.  I started off with hummus, red onion, tomato, pineapple and then I placed the pattie on top then added a couple of teaspoons of vegenasie on top of the pattie and a thin layer of srichacha sauce for some heat.

It took me roughly 10 minutes to prepare.  That’s what I call vegan fast food !!!!
